Polysaccharide-Iron Complex or PIC is the vehicle that NU-IRON^® uses to deliver ionized iron to the bloodstream so that the body can effectively make hemoglobin. The unique feature of PIC is that the ionized iron is delivered to the bloodstream without being exposed to the stomach or upper gastrointestinal tract. The benefit to patients is that they do not experience the debilitating side effects associated with regular forms of iron such as, irritation of the stomach lining or constipation.

You can see in the image below that the PIC is absorbed intact through the small intestines. Once absorbed, the PIC is broken down by enzymatic activity. The ionized iron is separated from the polysaccharide and then used by the body to make hemoglobin.
